alternative to serial null modem cable needed

    hi,

i am trying to fix a friends dreambox, original box accidently flashed with a clone image and giving off a sim 201 error sim not found.

I have dream up at the ready but no modem cable, before i go buy one, i need advice what will work best. My PC does not have serial connection, do i get some sort of usb adapter or is there a custom made cable that would work that i could get local pc shop to knock me up one? Advice appreciated thanks,

      thanks for the reply

I managed to get a usb - serial cable at local shop, can get dream up to the point it tells me to switch on the box then after box turns on nothing happens and all i see is a the same error, sim 201 not found. Any other way to recover the thing at this point?

Dreamup can be tempermental try another version here in the download section, or use the patch version of dreamup here

After trying loads of different version the patched one worked a treat for me......

jtag it? isn't that where u solder cables to certain pins etc? i don't think i could do it, is there a place you can send it to, to be fixed?

I currently want to cry ( yes i am a girl so its ok to admit it!)

did you get a usb to seriel converter AND a null modem cable?

the usb to seriel converter will get you to point where it asks you to switch box off/on.
but then you need null modem cable between converter and box.

it sounds to me like you don't have a null modem cable.....

yes i have both, it gets me to the point where dream up tells me to switch on the dreambox. The local pc shop assures me it is a null modem cable. The only thing is the cable has both ends on both sides, 9 & 15 pin plugs on both ends of the cable. Obviously i have the 9 pins connected to the dreambox and the pc via usb adapter cable.

As stated previously try different dream ups as the program can be temperamental and also use the correct drivers for the USB to serial.

this is the problem with null modem cables, not easy to verify it is null modem.

i would still be suspicious of the cable,
do you have another box you hook up, just make sure the cable is right?

or if your not in a hurry you could spend a couple of quid on ebay. then you will defo know you have null modem cable...

the drivers are installed dream up failed every time til they were done.

Seems to be that although dreamup suggests an ip address it just doesn't see it via telnet ftp or even the null modem cable for network purposes.

i do have another box but i am worried if i connect a working dreambox to dream up and turn the box on itl overwrite stuff. can anyone assure me it won't??

it wont overwrite unless you flash it.
just attach the box and try to connect.

it will do a ping test....

                            looks like this.

thanks for all the help. Some progress has been made, i connected an old vista laptop and tried the maplin drivers for the serial adapter, this failed too however the wtek drivers also listed on this site did work, i finally got a connection with the modem cable and the box is flashed successfully. thanks to all who got me this far, much appreciated.

Ok bad news is now i have both boxes running, there seem to be some sort of conflict with the nameserver ips i think. with dhcp enabled on both boxes they have diff ips not a problem there, but they both take ages to find the nameserver.

basically this is a 2nd box, the one already on the motorised dish, never had a problem with it. we now have the new dm800 upstairs and i can ftp and reach it via the web. however now i cannot do either of these with the original one downstairs.

Can anyone advise the correct settings for the 2nd box, i just need it to not interfere with the original one which is the one that drives the motorised dish. Please help
