    Static IP ?

I've just got a new router and its set to dynamic ip. Is it better to use a static ip with a dreambox ?

I've noticed some stuttering and freezing with the new router and wondered if this was because I have a dynamic ip.

If its better to use a static ip how do I change it on my windows xp system ? I've tried a few guides but can't get them to work.

Go in to your router and see what range the the router is using.

So say your router ip is 192.168.1.1

but the IP range it will give out starts from .100 then give your devices IPs upwards from 192.168.1.100

To set your static IP on your pc goto your network connections and pick your desired connection.

Now right click then edit then goto ipv4then properites

Now add the IP you want to give and subnet is 255.255.255.0
then gateway is your router IP

    Now for the dns servers

goto cmd and right click and run as admin then type ipconfig /all

you will see the dns servers from the text.

Some have 2 some have 1.

Add them and save and exit

        Short answer: no.
        Longer answer: definitely not

All the static/dynamic stuff does is during the DM bootup process and only then, the DM will ask your router for an unused IP address. After that bit of negotiation has completed, the IP address from the router is bound into the DMs software and the connection is enabled. If you set a static IP, then your DM just skips asking the question during the bootup, once the box is running its operation is exactly the same regardless of where it got its IP address from.

The static/dynamic setting in your router is likely more to do with your ISP than with your dreambox. Unless your ISP has specifically allocated you a unique IP address as part of your subscription then you must use the dynamic setting. Note that this setting is very different to allocating static IP's to your network connected devices.

For devices connected to the router its generally better to allow the router to allocate NAT IP's dynamically from its IP pool as this avoids conflicts that can occur with static allocation (ie, multiple devices trying to claim the same IP). The exceptions to this are any device you wish to use as a server - these devices should really have static IP's (preferably outside the dynamic pool range but still inside the subnet) and the relevant ports forwarded in the router, as well as matching static IP's defined within the devices themselves.

I do a half way house, set the router to be a DHCP server and then reserve IP addresses based upon MAC addresses, this way my DM, laptops, PS3, Wii etc ... always get the same IP allocated via DHCP.
