im thinking about upgrading my clone

Hi all, well i have a dm800hd pvr clone on motorised dish which i have found pretty good to use once i got over all the hurdles. i have just aquired another motorised dish for pennies and thought it would be a good gesture to install a setup for my parents. i can get dm500s for ?30 new but this does not have usuals which i would like so i am wondering whether to just hand my box over to them and upgrade to something better if there is such a thing. i have notice the new sunrays and just do not know about them yet at ?157 and was trying to keep the budget down after all it was a gesture this all started out at. I have read some reviews on the dm500hd clone and apparently they accept original images as well as clones and are supposed to be much better than the 800hd. So question is do i go for the 500hd or sunray over my 800hd or do i go with something else or maybe stick with what i have? . there is so many options over the dreambox and do not know where to go. Some suggestions would be great thanks. hope someone can make my mind up....

Personally i would stay away from the Dm800se to many people reporting problems over clock and time issues.

A Dm800 hd is gonna cost you 100 quid from China and if familiar with it i would buy another, cheaper option would be an Openbox or a Blade is another option which is easy to set up.

If i had a few quid would go for the Vu Duo or the Clark Tech Et 9000 which i would love to own.

So many hd receivers to choose from others include Xtrend ET9200 HD and the Qbox.

    Andy.

Thanks for the advice andy. I do really want to stick with the dreambox as i have just got used to it and if i remember rightly you helped me through the setup thanks. I was reading reviews on the dm500hd and they recon it is better than my 800hd but hope someone could confirm that as apart from it uses any image (clone or original) it is supposed to have better picture quality etc and costs more than my 800hd. do you think there is much between them apart from price as i am tempted to see if this is true. Also the sunray is another option with triple tuner and wifi but this to me is an upgrade of the dm800 and i have no idea what this offers apart from wifi which i am not too fussed on anyway and hope someone has one to comment on. I suppose i should stick with what i have got but hope someone can comment on either the 500hd or sunray so i can make my mind up. Thanks andy and everyone on DK.

Alot comes down to cost and opinion.
Guess thats why we all drive around in different cars
Personally if i wanted to upgrade would go for the latter of my options like the xtrend but im guessing theres alot less support compared to the Dreambox.
For 100 quid i would get a tried and tested Dreambox 800hd.
All part of the learning curve and thanks for remembering me its nice to be appreciated

well my R8 is in the garage as i dont like to get it dirty and my ford cortina still pulls so yeh i guess your rite. if its not broke then dont try and fix it. ive never had a problem with my 800hd apart from freezing now and again at peak times but guess thats down to the server or sumik which again is you get what you pay for. just thought that if i got sumik different and happened to turn out better then the parents would obviously get the downgrade. must look into this more but you give good advise and it will be taken on board. Thanks again mate.

well i think my mind has been made up to keep my 800hd and maybe buy another but as the openbox keeps coming up, i would like to know a little more on these and what kind of reviews anyone may have. i would like to give my folks a dreambox but the extras that come with it are just a million leagues away from anything their used to (normal tv and basic knowledge of how to turn a computer on). i have been reading quite a bit now on the openbox and read that the s10 is probally the best to get even though the s11 and s12 are out on shelves for less than ?60. I also read that the s11 and s12 are clones and the latter is not so stable when it comes down to performance. If openbox was more user friendly and stable to someone who knows very little about technology then which would it be? this will be to make my mind up for final, the s10 s11 or s12 your thoughts would be appreciated and thanks for reading.

I had the Openbox s9, must admit it was simple to setup, great picture quality on HD, had a few teething probs at the start, once new firmware came out it was fine, only downside was the epg was now and next :-(, and it only had one tuner, but your not looking for a dual, triple tuner, and you cant install a hard drive to record, but I'm sure you were able to use a usb stick in the back.
For a first box well worth the money, think there up to the s12 now ?, there's originals and clones out there, firmware for both.
If they dont care about the epg, dual tuners & recording progs etc, it's a winner :-) (I now own a Vu duo and a Vu ultimo and I can honestly say I dont see a difference in pic quality certainly not on HD channels).

Hi , I can only give my opinion on s9 openbox. I used it for 2 weeks and had to send it back due to really annoying menu and picture freezing. Now I dont know what to go for since the s9 was my first sat box after the starview. I saw cheap options like clone DM for like 40 quid but i would rather spend a bit more maybe on a vu Uno. Any advice would be great. All i need is a decent menu and no gizmos or extra options.

Thanks guys, the s9 is coming near its end so i have read and the option would be s10 s11 or even s12. i do like the s12 as a compact basic box but some reviews have been rife with problems and last thing i want to be doing is running to and fro to the parents sorting things out as even phone tutorials is beyond them (neolithic but very sweet). can anyone backup one or either of these three and swear by them for reliability. I have put a post on the openbox forum anyway as i am steering away from the dreambox i own and dont know if im allowed to take this further here. thanks all

lalas i fink shady is rite also. before i went this path i had a starpoo and then got a dreambox which is still teaching me new stuff and new hurdles every day but i love it. it is not a box for the first timer to say the least and i know by experience. i still get freezing and i personally put it down to connection speed as it runs fine through the day and most evenings but i really dont fink its my box to be honest. the reason i started this thread was for a simple box for my parents as they know nothing about technology and are way behind the times. so if its just something to watch tv and tv only then that is why i am asking about the openbox as they are supposed to be so simple to setup and good for the likes of my parents. im sure there are other boxes out there but i have sort of laid my mind to rest on this one but which model is the question. anyway dont take my word for it as i am still a newbie and everday is a learning curb mate.

I've had an openbox for about 2 years. upgraded from dm500s. picture is fantastic. if they have a HD TV its the cheapest and simplest option. epg is only now and next but surely your old man can pick up a TV magazine for under ?1

Have a look a the Vu's (uno & solo) m8, easy menu etc, I'm sure your parents would have no problem using it.
Switching off at the back and on then on again will cure 99.9% any problems :-), that will be your tech support covered :-)

yeh that was their last present to bring them up to digital standards. well these boxes for what they are are really cheap and ideal with the added extra of hd and cccam so it a definite contender. has anyone got an s12 then to minimise my options. is the software freely available for these and are they running as good as the rest as i heard they had issues which may now have been resolved with new firmware etc. if they still have issues then its go to be the s10/11... someone put me out of misery please.
