    Upgrading from DM500

    Hi,

I have been using the DM500 for a couple of years now and I am wanting to upgrade/change my box.

Which box would you suggest? I am looking to spend less than ?200.

Also, where is currently the best/cheapest place to get these in the UK?

    Thanks

I assume you want to upgrade to HD of course so the next question do you want to stick with the DM brand or maybe another brand of Enigma2 receiver.

Again Clones can be had from as little as around ?70 for the Cloud iBox (Vu Solo Clone), or perhaps a DM800se around ?130.

You can also get some other branded Enigma2 receivers such as the Xtrend, Technomate, Gigablue etc.. from as little as ?130

Yes, I definitely want HD and the ability to record.

I am not overly fussed which brand/box but I would like one with a decent EPG and ideally one that is fairly simple to set up or better yet, can be bought set up. I managed to do my DM500 by myself but I've pretty much forgotten everything on it.

Most will tell you to get a Dreambox 800hd or Se or a Vu Duo regarding where from I wouldn't buy from Uk I take my chance with China, loads cheaper and only takes 4 or 5 days to deliver, Andy.

Thanks. Is there a particular reason not to buy from UK?

Are there any sites you'd recommend for purchasing?

I'm in exactly the same boat as you scott. I have a DM500 and looking to upgrade too.

I'm guessing what I want is similar to you so, HD and the ability to record (built in if possible), a minimum of 2 tuners - not sure if any quad ones are available but they'd be even better.

EPG needs to be decent too, the one on the DM500 wasn't great really and it was a tricky box to work your way around.

I heard the Vu+ Duo is decent, only found a price of over ?300 when looking at those though (with build in HDD) but from what I was told, they are the closest your going to get to a 'sly' style epg.

Would like to get some opinions of people that have diff boxes or have used more than one.

The VU solo2 comes in cheaper and is way faster than the Duo by miles Circa ?279 if you look around, Quad tuners then its the Duo2 Circa ?449

Never heard of gigablue quad.. is it a new box? Does it run the same software like Enigma or is it completely different? Wouldn't mind seeing some screenshots or videos of it in action in comparison to the duo boxes.

That Duo2 one seems decent as well.

All about how much you want to spend really... or should I say how much the wife will let me spend

I buy from China for the sole reason the boxes you buy from UK are imported from the same source and they hack the price up plus there's no guarantee if there's a problem and have to return your any better off, Andy.

Gigablue Quad runs the Same Broadcom Chipset and 1300mhz processor as the Solo2 does without going into great detail as it has been done before both are Enigma2 and will run the same Plugins etc.. for you

Will the DM800 and Vu+ Solo2 give me the 3D channels too?

You get 3D in the bouquet and need a 3DTV but yes you can watch 3DTV through a Dreambox 800hd, Andy.
