Pin out for Null Modem Cable

If you want to make up a null modem cable to flash your box, the following are the pin outs that worked for me:
Pin 1 - Pin 4
Pin 2 - Pin 3
Pin 3 - Pin 2
Pin 4 - Pin 1 and Pin 6
Pin 5 - Pin 5
Pin 6 - Pin 4
Pin 7 - Pin 8
Pin 8 - Pin 7
Pin 9 - Not used

If you have a cable and don't know if it's a null modem cable, just test the pins as per the connections above with a metre and you will then know.

Does anyone know if the handshaking connections are necessary? I've an old homemade 2,3,5 cable I found lying about that I'm going to try tonight and wondered if I'll need to add in the handshaking wires or not.

AFAIK one of the most common schemes is for the DTE (the PC) to assert the RTS signal if it is ready to send data, and DCE (the box) to assert CTS when it is able to receive data. By connecting the RTS pin of one device to the CTS pin of the other device, we can simulate this handshake.

Thanks for the reply. A lot of devices don't need handshaking enabled though, I used to do a fair bit of work on datamodems and they just needed 2,3 xo & 5 to talk to the PC. On other devices you also need to link out 4&6 and 7&8.

I guess I'll just suck it and see tonight.

Worked fine for me connecting only 2->3, 3->2 and 5->5, no need to link out RTS & CTS either. My main PC doesn't have a serial port and rather than use an old one I used a USB to RS232 dongle, set up as COM4: worked a treat.

Well didnt work out for my part, tryed everything and the DREAMup cant establish any connection / open COM 1. So no i will try make one like the first suggestion. btw anybody know if there is any issues with win xp on com ports? Ned to change any settings on the port? I cant use LAN because i fck up the box, so no need for the suggestion ;-)
