    What to buy??

    Hi All,

I have been a TM1500CI owner for about 5 years, and unfortunately its use has now come to its life end, due to only FTA channels now being available.

I am therefore looking for an alternative to watch my Saturday afternoon footy, and it appears that Linux is the only way forward ;-) I am not too bothered about HD as price is more important. Will the DM500S fulfill my needs to be able to access the footy?

My requirements are for a relatively future proofed box for next couple of years and also cost. DM800HD would be nice option, however the missus aint gonna be happy with the cost (hence looking at DM500S instead at around ?70).

Any advice would be much appreciated.

One final question, if the box were to be "setup" for the internet, is there an option to use a proxy so that IP is hidden if connecting to other sites/IP's (just in case someone attempts to log IP address)?

    Thanks

Well you had the TM1500CI for around 5 years, the price of an equivalent Technomate 5400 Ci+ today is around ?85.00, so to be honest you have not done to badly over five years.

If you want to buy something that will last another 5 years plus then you are realy going to have to splash out on some latest tech.

Ok a clone Dreambox 500 for fifty quid or so thats not bad, but its starting to get a little dated and support will gradually fall off as this model is coming up to 10 years old before that it was Dbox 1 so it has been around a while.

A clone Dreambox 800 can be bought for as little as 180-230 pounds, with this you will get better longer lasting support and brings with it HD.

If you want to stay away from clone receivers the Cheapest HD model is the new DB500-HD retailing at over 300 pounds while the 800HD retails about 380 pounds.

But Consider if you get Five or more years out of one its well worth it, be it a clone or a real one, it works out at just over 50 quid a year for five year and you might not have to buy a new receiver for even longer than that.

You will need a VPN to mount over your existing internet connection. If you need one, PM me. If your PC routes internet connection to the box via a router (not connecting to your ISP), you can install and configure the VPN on the PC. When you connect, any internet router from the box via the router to the PC will be on the VPN.

Just make sure you change your boxes DNS settings (name servers) to use the one from the VPN provider.

Option 2, use VPN on a router. Some Linksys routers can be flashed with a 3rd party software to provide true tunneling. Or buy a VPN router and setup the certificates and keys from the VPN provider.
