how to find what image (firmware) including version is currently running on dreambox?

power your box off and power it back on and then look at the tv screen ,if the box has an image on it the image name should appear on the tv screen . it can say the GP (gemini project) or nabilosat or pli or dream elite etc . if your box has a little lcd screen on the front of it this will dispaly information also such as sim and bootloader version.

DM 500 V8

Thanks once again piopat. Im quite new to the subject. ive ordered the Chinese DM 500 V8 and while waiting for it to arrive i prepare myself by a lot of reading. this box is quite cheap to suit a beginner. i understand that it comes with a Chinese image. may be that i will want to backup it and then to reflash the box.
one can make img backup file with telnet command cat /dev/mtd/3 > /tmp/backup.img and one can make fw2 backup file with flash wizard. what is the difference between these backup files does one contain more information than the other?

if the box comes with a chinese image all the menus will be unreadable (unless you know chinese of course) so if you dont know chinese there will be no use in backing up that image . but if you reflash the box with a different image and you install cams/emus etc you could then backup the image which is making a copy of the image which you can store on your pc .

you are right but they claim they provide english menus

you may be able to simply change the language on the image if what they say is true ,but if not you can change it.
