    dreambox vs openbox

Hi there, im looking to get into this whole linux based receiver business. Im on a bit of a budget however,. I was looking at the openbox S9 HD because it's HD (which was a mjor selling point) and low cost. However everybody seems to like the dreambox 500 more as it is more supported and whatnot. What do people suggest i do as i don't think i can afford a DM800HD. Thanks Steph

ive just found a website selling DM800HD with M revision tuner for ?118. Isn't this a bit cheap to be real? I thought they were ?180 odd, but if this is legit then ill get this one.

if its only a sky dish that needs fixing, should cost about ?50 fitted including dish, where abouts are you, i know a few people in a few areas that charge this, even better get dish up yourself.

The openbox s9 HD is a far more limited box to the dreambox. For a complete begginner who isn't interested in extras or plugins or tinkering. I'd recommend the S9 HD everytime...

It's HD and it's dirt cheap for a HD box. Asking about this on the dreambox forum I think you're going to get biased replies....especially if some people have some vested interest in selling these boxes.

You might run into some problems with the S9 but nothing you can't overcome very easily. The biggest problem the S9 has is the reboot loop on some frequencies....but very easily overcome with many people providing support over the internet and new firmware updates almost monthly. Also the first version/revisions of the S9 had a really rubbish remote - the newer versions are said to have a much improived remote.

Picture qaulity wise, S9 will trash dm500s. With regards to how easy they are to use... the DM500 is probably easier once setup.... bouqets and channels lists/organizing far easier on dm500.

but initial setup i.e. flashing, ftp'ing you cfg files etc is probably easier on S9 as you only need usb stick - no ftp required (ftp not possible for s9)

Basically if you want HD picture and have a decent tv to appreciate it - go for s9 (around ?85-95 on auction site). If you're not bothered about HD and want something even cheaper...clone dm500... although i particularly like the v8 version which also costs no more than ?40-50

yes im just looking for a sky minidish, ive seen them fitted on argos for ?80. Im in north london if you can recommend somebody. Also thanks very much redondo5 that was very helpful, you described exactly what im looking for and it seems S9 HD is exactly what i need, all i want is to do something that runs CCcam and thats all. The only reason i wanted the dreambox was because of the extensive support, but it doesnt seem like im gonna make full use of it so i may aswell go HD with the open box. Anyone know any reliable UK sellers of open S9 for me? Steph

Not sure about UK sellers, but ebay might be your best bet. Most of the chinese S9 sellers on ebay are reliable (judging by feedback) and i know of many who've bought from there.

It depends on whether you willing to wait a week before it arrives and also the problem of making any potential returns in case of faults. Chinese seller will be cheaper but you lose out on delivery time and any sort of worth your while warranty. Also very very tiny chance of having to be import tax... but from my experience after witnessing (myself and friends) purchasing several relatively high value items from Chinese sellers I've never been hit by import/duty or additional shipping costs.

There are several names the S9 HD goes under as well. And some of the uk sellers might be selling under these names. just check with them that the firmware for S9 is compatible and it should be ok.
