serial connection to dreambox dm500

Hi Guys,

I learnt the hard way that I cannot flash a normal dreambox image over a maxvar image, and was left with an uncommunicative dreambox.

So I have ordered from Amazon a USB/serial cable since my pc has no serial port. I noticed that this cable (and every other USB/Serial cable I have searched for) has a male serial connection. My Dreambox (DM500) is also a male port. So I presume to need a F/F db9 gender changer.

But then I remember something about a null modem cable, not a serial cable. So perhaps I don't need a gender changer, but need a male to female null modem adapter for the serial cable.

Can someone who has connected this stuff up before advise whether I can communicate with the dreambox via serial connection, or whether I need to add the crossover adapter to get these two devices talking.

A null modem cable is an RS-232 serial cable where the transmit and receive lines are crosslinked. See http://www.home-machine-shop.com/bit...ODEM_CABLE.jpg. I'm working with the same configuration (usb to serial, and 9 pin cable) and it's fine..

Yep, just like a crossover ethernet cable. I was wondering if the wires need to be crossed (have to buy a null modem adapter), or if I can use a plain serial cable?

Yes mate you need a null cable and a usb to serial if you have no serial out on your pc................

Yes, need to be crossed. One to one will not work.
