    Anyone Tried This?

Hi I was messing around at a friends house the other day.

He lives in the middle of the French country side and has a dreambox for freeview as he only has a 3G dongle for internet access.

Anyway I connected the dreambox to his windows xp computer with a crossover cable and used internet connection sharing to share the dongle.

Put a line into the cam config and it cleared the channels. It does stutter occasionally but but given its all a bit Heat Robinson it works remarkably well.

I left him watching sky movies ;-)

If anybody is interested I'll post more detailed instructions on how to set it up.

Well taken that the computer has to be running and sharing the internet connection when he wants to watch subscription channels on the Dreambox, it should work by all means.

...HOWEVER it must also be taken that his Dreambox is a newer model Dreambox, say ENIGMA 2 that has Wi-Fi built it .....OR atleast an older model Dreambox, Enigma 1, that has a USB port where you can attach a Wi-Fi dongle .....OR even simpler you shared the internet connection via the Ethernet cable.

As you've posted this in the Enigma 1 Chat section of the forum I presume the the latter of the methods, right?

Nice idea, what box is he using? I could try this for myself too.

he could even get a 3g router put his 3g dongle in and then a ethernet cable or wireless to the dreambox

A 3G Router with a SIM Card slot and Ethernet ports? Yup, that'd work, probably the best option as well... though I dunno how much those Routers cost, may be expensive.

The guy does not have a router or anything at all other than the computer, a lump of wire and usb connected dongle and a DM500s.
We originally set it up with a TNT sat card as the price of card was 15 euros with the box costing about 40 quid it was a lot cheaper than the 160 -190 euro they wanted in the supermarket for the TNT satbox.

Its just a basic box enigma1 no wifi, The cross over lead allows you to connect 2 (but only 2 devices without a hub/switch/router). The internet connection sharing on the windows box then turns it into a simple router doshing out IP addresses on its Ethernet port and forwarding traffic too and from the internet via the usb dongle.

I'll write it up anyway as it would be nice to give something back to the community from which I have learned a lot

One of the reasons for trying it was he is thinking of swapping from 3G dongle to a sat link as adsl and cable are not available in the middle of nowhere

Too many latency issues with standard 3g. The excessive ping times make it unwatchable with constant stuttering and freezing.
HSPA+ is a different story, the new e367 dongle from (3)Three has sub 100ms ping times if you live in a hspa area , so this may now actually be worthwhile
