    Looking at a dreambox 500?

Hi, really new to dreamboxes and have been reading up quite a lot today and think I have a rough idea whats needed.

I have a sky sub downstairs, and an old skybox in my room with 2 coax cables going to the dish, only receiving freeview channels though.

Can I take out the old box, and connect the dreambox in itsplace, and still watch normal sky downstairs at the same time as the box upstairs?

what do I need to flash the box ie cable, I have read that it is a null modem cable, and also that I will need some type of usb converter as my laptop doesnt have the proper type of connection.

And finally can anyone reccomend whether a clone dreambox is advisable or not, and if so where is a reputable uk seller that I can purchase from.

I have had a look around some sites but kind of sceptical to just rushing into and purchasing from the without finding out if they are still in business or reputable or not.

    Thanks,

    Jordan

    hi

you will have no problems using dm 500 upstairs with other box down stairs
all dm500s are clone boxs now the genuine ones have not been made for a long time now

dm 500s are getting a bit dated now and no hd from them maybe you dont need it

also alot of people have had no success using usb to serial converters

Hi, many thanks for the reply,

HD isnt an issue, not too bothered about it for upstairs TV, just looking for a cheap box to start with to see how I manage with it, then if all goes well, will probs upgrade and ditch sky.

I might have an old laptop kicking about somewhere that has one of those ports on it, will need to check.

      thanks

do you really need a null modem cable? can you not do everything via telnet/ftp?

To flash an image using Telnet

This method will only work with a .img image file.
Rename the image file to backup.img
FTP the image file to the /tmp folder on the dreambox
Telnet to your box and paste the following command:
              cd /tmp && eraseall /dev/mtd/3 && cp backup.img /dev/mtd/3 && reboot

Not my work but, works a treat .............Paul

So really there isn't any need for a null modem cable unless you pretty much brick your box.
