I have tried various usb to rs232 adapters and the one Ive found to work is from ftdi.com, works a treat with a null modem cable. The cable is female - female not male - male as someone quoted or male - female.
Also try another version of dreamup as not all work!
Failing that, I dont mind having a go to sort it for you but you will have to pay postage both ways - i live in Lincoln.
Get the right kit and you will sort it mate, unless its toast that is.
