green light, black screen, no ftp/telnet

Hello

I have bought me 2nd dm500s (clone) and during the flashing I made a mistake which I have no idea how to fix.

I connected through telnet on my dreambox after I uploaded the image I wanted to install in the var/tmp directory.
On telnet I typed "eraseall /dev/mtd/3 && cp backup.img /dev/mtd/3".
Now in order to do this, one must have changed the path to var/tmp by typing cd var/tmp which I forgot to do it.

The erase part was completed and since I was at the wrong path the installation of the new img did not happen because the copy function (cp) failed.

Immediately after this I could not ftp to the box and no telnet. Basically, my router doesn't see the box anymore and DCC gives me an error 10057 send socket failed.

The light is green on the box and the screen is black on the tv. My question is, have I deleted everything without installing a new image and now I have an empty box? If that's true then how do I fix this, do I need an rs-232 cable or normal ethernet can do it?

About the null modem cable then. I see my old P4 2.4Ghz has 2 slots for rs-232. One I remember was used for the onboard graphics card, does that mean if i use the other one I will be able to flash?
It might be a noob question but believe it or not through my 12 years of computer/programming experience I have never seen a null cable modem unless I have been blind

A null modem cable is a 9 pin Dsub rs232 style cable. They are wired up differently to a standard serial cable. The port on the back of your PC will have to be a 9pin female socket, a vga graphics port is 15 pin... If you do not have a 9pin serial port you will need to buy yourself an RS232/serial to USB converter.

I checked again the back of that pc and I am positive that it has 2 9-pin sockets, and one of them was for the vga. No other way to connect a monitor there as I double checked and no 15-pin connector (as i said, old model ). Maybe some weird configuration.
Anyhow, you said that on the back of the pc should be female 9-pin, but all i see is 2 males 9-pin just like on the back of the dreambox. That means I need rs-232 cable that has 9-pin female on both edges right?

You can get a converter from usb to d-connector from maplins, I got one about a month ago and it works well.

I think I done the same thing last night. You can flash it manually without a null model cable.

Flash via the root.cramfs method

It means that you use the network connection (or crossover cable) to FTP the image to your Dreambox and to flash it manually.

This way is only supported by the CDK boxes or what are also called Engima 1 boxes.

the DM500, the DM56xx and the DM7000

When you have an UTP (LAN) connection between your PC and Dreambox, do the following:

Rename the image into root.cramfs (in small letters)
Copy this root.cramfs with a FTP-software to your Dreambox in the subdirectory /var/tmp
Push on the Dream or Menu button on your remote control to get into the Enigma menu
Go to the System Settings menu and choose the Software update

Now choose Software update where you will see 2 possibilities:
Internet update
Manual update

Now you choose the last option (Manual Update).



The Dreambox is now looking for your /var/tmp/root.cramfs file and when it is found flashing starts the usual way.


or Just Flash it the normal way with the null modem cable!

Also check your password incase is defaulted to the original password.

Ok everything is ok now. My solution was clearly the null cable modem like suggested above. I couldn't ftp to the box no matter what, but when I got my 8 euros null modem cable(rs-232), and powered up dreambox everything was working flawlessly.
Flashed it with dreamup and now I am a happy dreamboxer again.

I suggest everyone get a rs-232 cable to avoid possible frustration in the future.
