DM500s (Ubuntu and windows, cannot get Dreamup Working see logs)

    Hi Guys,

I have held off posting for a week to attempt alloptions. Bought by dreambox on ebay it has pin code set and the root password is not the default Dreambox. The guy I bought it off doesnt seem to be able to help!.

I have purhcased two null model cables with USB adapters at the end. The box itself works fine I can pick up channels on it, but cant access the setup menu.

My example below is with ubuntu as that seemed to give me the best logging for the usb-serial driver

    [ 33.880701] usb 2-1.2: new full-speed USB device number 3 using ehci_hcd
[ 34.035041] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
[ 34.035050] USB Serial support registered for generic
[ 34.035075] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
[ 34.035077] usbserial: USB Serial Driver core
[ 34.036140] USB Serial support registered for pl2303
    [ 34.036160] pl2303 2-1.2:1.0: pl2303 converter detected
    [ 34.038372] usb 2-1.2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[ 34.038386] usbcore: registered new interface driver pl2303
[ 34.038388] pl2303: Prolific PL2303 USB to serial adaptor driver
    [ 2446.889311] usb 2-1.2: USB disconnect, device number 3
    [ 2446.889680] pl2303 ttyUSB0: pl2303 converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
    [ 2446.889715] pl2303 2-1.2:1.0: device disconnected
    [ 2458.082240] usb 2-1.2: new full-speed USB device number 4 using ehci_hcd
[ 2458.226226] USB Serial support registered for ch341-uart
    [ 2458.226255] ch341 2-1.2:1.0: ch341-uart converter detected
    [ 2458.228251] usb 2-1.2: ch341-uart converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[ 2458.228262] usbcore: registered new interface driver ch341

From the logs above you can see I have attemped with two different cables to test out 1: ch341 and 2: pl2303.

As you can imagine each time i lauche Dreamp up sudo ./Dreamup i get the usual connection prepared but nothing else

P.s. took one the cables to an old pc that had a serial port and dreamup still complained this was on windows xp.

From peoples experience, do you still think the problem is with the cable its self rather than the box and is there any other way for me to test these cables.

    Cheers one and all.

You need a genuine RS232 Serial port on your PC or Laptop in order to get DreamUp to work properly. And a 9 pin to 9 pin null-modem cable. With that connection only (if you give DreamUp the correct COMx port, image flash will take around 15 minutes.

But if you also have an ethernet connection between DM500 and PC and give DreamUP the IP addresses of your DM500 and PC, flashing will take less than 3 minutes!

Why waste money on USB-Serial cables that don't work? If your desktop PC doesn't have a genuine Serial port, then give it one, fcs! A slot-in PCI RS232 9 pin adaptor card costs less than a fiver on fleabay, inc P&P, and installation is PnP, probably on COM1

Whereas if you have a half reasonable lappie that has a PCMCIA card slot, then an RS232 adaptor card, again with a 9 pin port, can be found at the same source for a similar amount of dosh. If the lappie has a docking station port underneath, then the new serial port will probably be assigned to COM2 (as COM1 will already be assigned to the docking port, even if nowt is connected to it).

So in either case, you'll have a GENUINE rs232 9 port connection on your computer, along with it's own hardware IRQ address, which DreamUp prefers, and you'll never look back! All for under a tenner, including a cable as long as you want, LOL!

    Cheers- AL

      Thanks for your reply!

      1) I have added a serial port to my desk top via : RS-232 2 Port Serial PCI Card I/O Expansion Brand New | eBay

      2) I have purchased a null modem cable : Blue USB with White Sync Data Cable for Serial Null Modem | eBay

Afraid I still have no luck, the drivers for all above works fine but when I connect the dreambox to the PC and start up Dreamup click connect, power on the box nothing happens. I cannot use the ftp option as the previous owner of the box has changed the default root password (and also has a pin on the setup guide on the box) so without null modem option I am stuck.

Do people still think its all down to my cable / serial port?
