How to flash DM500S with just Cross-over cable?

Hi. Today my Old desktop running windows XP with both ethernet and RS232 ports has died. Its the one i use to flash both both dbox2 and dreambox.

I have a laptop running vista and only has an ethernet port. Is it possible to flash new image without null modem cable? And can vista handle this?

Dreambox will flash fine with just cross over cable if you use telnet. Theres a sticky for it.

You can flash the DBox also if you ftp your image file to the tmp folder (again using cross over cable) and flash using the software update option on the DBox.

I tried telnet on my Vista PC and message is coming that --telnet can not be found''

One other thing is that my dm500 if failing to boot constantly switching off and on, thats why i want to flash a new image. So at the moment i can not log into the dreambox and its IP is not working

By default telnet is disabled in vista. To install it...

        1. Click Start then select Control Panel.

        2. Select Programs and Features.

        3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.

        4. Select the Telnet Client option.

        5. Click OK.

If the box is constantly rebooting you need to flash with a null modem cable. You can either borrow a friends pc or get hold of a usb - serial adapter, loads on ebay.
