Connect Dm 500s to internet via a laptop & mobile dongle

    Hi M8s....
Some time later today i am going to set up my Dm 500s...

I was wondering if it is possable to connect it to the internet via a laptop with a usb broadband dongle?

If poss. i want to put this in the loft without having to run extra
    wires for a fixed line.

Any advice would be welcome, as i am new to the linux side of things... but should be ok with the basic setting up of things.

    Regards @manspud.

I did something similar. What you need is a cross-over cable and connect the laptop to your dreambox through this cable. Use your laptop as your dreambox gateway. If you search google about the method to share internet connection between two PCs using cross-over cable it will be similar to what you are going to do.

why dont you get yourself a mobile broadband router..

you can then get one of these from ebay to turn your D500 ethernet port into a usb connection and then plug a regular wireless usb dongle into the adapter..

this saves your d500 being hooked up to your laptop all the time

this is something worth looking into. I didnt know that there is a mobile broadband router.

What happens if a mobile broadband dongle is just put into a ethernet To USB cable then inset it into a Dreambox? Will the box not receive internet without the modem?

I have checked the prices for mobile broadband modem prices and they are pricey.

So the normal netgear modem will not do the job if connected to the dongle Via ethernet to USB cable?

you can plug a normal USB Wireless dongle into the adapter in order to connect to a normal wireless router.. for example if you are on a broadband service that is hardwired i.e. Virgin..

if you want to plug your O2 / T-Mobile / 3 Mobile Broadband dongle into the back of the dreambox via the adapter it wont work

maybe because we are used to getting these routers for free. I have never paid for a router, always receive them free from broadband companies. But this mobile router is a special one

Think I had a similar situatation.

I have my dm500s connected to my laptop with an ethernet cable. I used the network bridge function in windows to connect the network between my laptop and my dm500s to my wireless network.

You highlight both networks, right-click and then you can network the dm500s.

                        Hope this is of use.

Cheers M8s for the feed back... I have ordered a solwise 3G router... Both the kids want their own laptops for christmas, so with this option i can move the printer and nas upto the loft as well... Also has the added avantege of keeping Mrs @manxspud happy by having two less toys in the front room.
                          Regards & thanks @manxspud.

Doesn't the wireless dongle require drivers?
