    3.5 HD Caddy--500hd

I bought this a while ago when one on my HDs gave up, what
i was thinking if i bought a hard drive to fit it and a new cable
would this be ok to play vids ect from and record the odd
tv show, its a standard usb cable so i'd need one of those
that goes from norn usb to the smaller one.

No !!!! The Mini USB on a Dreambox 500HD has No Power, so it can Not power an external HDD. The Mini USB on the 500HD is only for System or Firmware Updating.

Your Dreambox 500 HD has an Esata Port this can be plugged into an external HDD that also has Esata Port, But it has to have external Power source.....

      But.......

If this is not what you Want there is a Modification you can do enabling a USB ports....

      First Step

      Remove Both Resistors R1010 & R1011

Buy yourself a USB cable that plugs into a Mother board (Normally for a PC)

Plug the Cable into the Pins on the Dreambox System board

Thread the Cable around to the rear of the receiver and pop out the Blank section then fix the Cable to the Chassis with some Glue etc

Note: if you do this USB Modification its advised to use a current protected USB HUB, to protect the Receiver and your attached devices...

Use a Hub that has stated protected from over current levels.

WOW thats some tech stuff there and although i have no
problem or fear trying it out i dunno if i want to go taking
my 2 month old box to bits to try it, gonna save that and
this info for later maybe try it.

Got my dish and receiver running pretty smooth and i gotta
same i'm impressed with the quality of picture and sound
and the best part-well almost-is learning all that has to do
        with it.
1 thing i do find when i stream my DM to my pc it takes a while
to get going but my TM500 seems to set up and stream
        instantly.
Just gotta see if i can get a fair priced HD that will fit right
        out the box.

epg--DM500hd---how do you get it running ?
Is there something on the blue button.....using Gemini...
But its a great receiver with stunning HD....money
          well spent.

To be honest that mod is relatively easy, the hardest part is sticking the usb part to the chassis ....

When you say remove both resistors what exactly do you
mean ? i opened my box up to have a look and the board
looks exactly like your picture, do i manually remove something
              there ?
I can see the pins the cable connects to and i see the port
on the back where it comes out.

Just wanna get it right and not damage anything

Also what kind of glue would you recommend ?

              edited to add.............found this

The two resistors are marked with Red Lettering. Remove them with a soildering Iron (Be careful and use a small tip while applying Heat to the component.

                  Thanks
Had to order that cable from the web and that hub,
i had a suitable usb powered hard drive
when it arrives i'll fit it and let you know how it works.

                  Thanks again

Got all my parts and the tech says the resistors
can be removed by using a very small screwdriver,
well i have done all this but the cable in the picture
is a blue one with 10 connectors, the cable with
the black end has 5 and the one i have has 5.
I'm a bit confused as to how the black cable fits ?
                    what side goes where.

                    thanks
