Nearly cracked it but need some help..

    Folks,

I am new but have read up, searched, read posts, forums etc and spent the whole day getting acquainted with the Dreambox 500-S.

I decided to try and get familiar with the box myself instead of going back to 'the shop' each time I have a problem. I think it is an original box as the MAC address starts with 00-09-34 when checked with Telnet.

    I have a few questions:

    - At the shop, the guy installed an image but I dont know
which one is currently on the box. How can I check this?

When I go to Menu > About it shows:

    BoxType: DM500
    BoardRev: 0.6
    Kernel Linux 2.69
    Release: 0460

I remember something on a Menu like Gemini Server when I was in the shop.

    - How do I know what generation of box this is DM500 c,t,
etc and what is essentially the difference?

I have got all the tools set up like DCC, DBE, FileZilla, DreamUp and all the cables - so if this 'does' have a basic image and I want to change it.

    - What is the best image to install - Pli Jade or Nabilo Dark
Star? What directory should I save this in?

    - Where can I download a 'Custom Created Channel List' say
similar to 'Sky' with an appropriate 'Skin' with the Channel
    numbers edited e.g. 101 BBC 1 etc.

    Does this even exist?

Appreciate the help and I am going to continue reading and searching..

    Thanks

    Hi mate

Unless you bough your box 4 years ago and its been in the cupboard its a clone.. DM haven't made a 500 for 4 years.. The guy in the shop will have used a program that you can download from here to change the MAC Address..

When you completely power off the box and then turn it on you should see a boot image.. Does it have a GP on it..? If so its a Gemini image..

Images are a personal thing, I prefer Gemini but others may tell you to go with what they prefer..

You can upload a bouquet which you can find in this part of the forum to sort out your channels etc..

      Hi Mate,

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it.

OK - So I basically got shafted for the price I paid (live and learn I guess) but at least I am making progress with it by experimenting!

Since my post, I have managed to upload different images, Nabilosat Darkstar 2 and PLI Jade 3 Max Var.

The problem now is that I cannot get the channels to work - some of them work like ITV 3 etc but the others ENCRYPTED ones are not appearing.

The screen is just black and hangs..

Any ideas what I am doing wrong.

      The steps i followed.

      1) Install Image
      2) Scan for transponder and set satellite to Eurobird 1.
      3) Finish scan.
      4) AFAIK - This should work.

What is CCCam and do I need to install it for the Encrypted channels to work? I have a valid sky subscription..

      I am baffled

        You should be aimed at

        Eurobird 1 & Astra 2A/2B/2D at 28.2?E

if you have a valid sky sub eg a card you have to edit your box key in CCcam..

CCcam is an EMU it lets the box read the card..

        In the search bar enter:

        Sky White Card

There are loads of threads mate

Just out of interest how much did you pay for your DM500S..??

To answer your previous question the S/C/T on DM500 relates to what tuner it has

        S = Satellite TV
        C = Cable TV
        T = Terrestrial TV

          Thanks for your response again.

I can't believe I am still up at this time, I will check it out again in the morning but if I have done some more searching and learned a bit more.

If I can ask you a couple of questions that would help me greatly and I will also search some more!

What I have done so far is:

Installed Pli Jade 3 Max Var Image
Pointed to Eurobird 1 28.2 E - Is it ok just to install this one?

The setup had so many different options like No DisEQ etc and 'Simple', 'Complex' so I stuck to '1 LNB with a direct connection'.

I now have to figure out how to read the card with CCCam - to get the rest to work.

I paid ?140.00 for the box and the configuration - I got shafted right??! Could always take it back and get a HD Box for a bit more??

You were right it had the big GP on it so it came with a Gemni Image. Just out of interest - is it better to use a GP image with a DM500 S and which is the best GP image?

I should be able to install CCCam from within the dreambox right or do i need to do it in DBE? Any pointers?

          Cheers.

yeah mate at that price you was defo shafted. i paid ?53 for mine when i bought it was the black model with power switch at back, it came flashed but i flashed with a new image once it came.

for a extra ?40 mate you could have got a dm800hd clone. i'd take it back if you can mate.

personally my favourite image on the 500 is Pli Jade 3.

For ?140 I would take it back to the shop and give the guy a slap too. That is obsurd for a dm500s.

As far as CCcam is concerned you can download it within the dreambox. I'm not familiar with the nabilo image though. Unless I am mistaken you will need CCcam and NewCS to get the encypted sky channels working. Once you have installed CCcam you will need to insert your boxkey in order for CCcam to read your card.

mate for ?140 you could have got a dm800hd ,to say he shafted you on the price is putting it mildly ,a dm500s should cost no more than about ?70 even if bought locally. personally if it were me i would put back on the gemini image that was there when you bought it (and by the way he charged you ?70 to put an image on your box ) and take it back and demand a refund ,tell him you contacted consumer rights about him. if you need any help on the cccam side of things mate send me a pm .
i love it when a dreambox comes together.

Yea but taking it back cus it was 'too dear' isnt a valid reason for returning it. The deal is done.

However, selling a fake clone box is a valid reason to return it for a refund as the goods are not as described.

i think being charged more than double what the box should cost is a very valid reason to return it ,but thats up to scoobster .going back and saying its not an original wont work as he would simply argue the fact that all these dm500s boxes are now all clones as the original box hasnt been made in about 3 years. i am a senior member on a few forums and sadly i see the likes of this a lot ,these guys know a lot of people know little about these boxes and they take advantage . if a person knows nothing about these boxes and the guy in the shop charges a fair price and is honest and offers to set it up for him at an extra cost thats quite ok . but to be charged more than twice the cost of the box simply because the guy spent 12 minutes flashing it for me is not ok .
i love it when a dreambox comes together.
