Whats needed to view FTA channels in U.S.?

Just got this free DM500 clone working, thanks to Grizz! I am totally new to all this (but learning fast with your help)...

I live in the U.S. and I would like to start getting experience with these units by first just being able to watch any normal Free to Air channels that are available in English audio... (should be pretty easy, right?) and take it from there.

Since I'm using a clone DM500 and just want to view anything, Can anyone please tell me what specific (1)Image to flash, (2)Emulator to run, (3)Channel list and/or Bouquets to install, and (4) Satellite info to target??

I've scoured the archives to try to avoid asking for help but haven't found a clear answer as to whats needed, in what order, for me to get started.

I assume you have the satellite version of the DM500 - what satellite are you pointed at, have you done a transponder scan to see what channels are picked up.
