hi mate when he goes into device manager its not there. some people are saying it has to be a powerd hardrive rather than just a usb one is this true?

Ideally it does need to be powered, i had problems with a usb external(low power) so i took it apart and found a nice 500gig 2.5 sata inside. I put this inside the dm800.

What format is the drive? If it's NTFS then the dreambox wont read it. I've got a self power external connected to mine and it works fine. Took ages to figure it out how to do it but once you know, it's easy

Yes you can if you mount it rather than initalising it. I've got my HDD in FAT32 for the exact same reasons. I can record to my dreambox then when needed, connect it to the ps3 to view movies etc

You'll notice that you are now able to pause but not record. you need to ftp into your box and create a folder called "movie" in Media/HDD
