Best way to connect a dm800 to the net with virgin media?

my dad has a dm800hd and his internet supply is via virgin media...his box glitches all the time, and its not the server as i have same supplier so i know its not that.

His connection to the box is done as this:

Cable router ------cable out to a comtrend powerline

-----comtrend power line downstairs......lead into the dm

    Is this creating the problem?

the powerline adapter isnt plugged into an extension lead with power surge protection is it?? if so this could be the problem. Have you tried switching clines with your dad to see if there is any difference?

Is it possible to move the router closer to the box and connect them via ethernet? I personally use Wifi and it's perfect.

you can try that... if the results are better then we can assume that the problem is the homeplugs.

Just like smoggie said, Make sure your homeplugs are connected directly onto a WALL POWER SOCKET... not to an extension lead from BOTH SIDES. if this has no effect and the glitching remains... Get yourself a long ethernet wire from amazon, many sizes available.

you should stick to wired connections unless the box is in the same room or directly next door, in which case a wireless dongle should work well.

some of those homeplugs are renowned for slowing internet down a whole heap mate, and obv the further the distance away the less peed that goes through anyway, i have a 50m ethernet cable i use to sort faults and i just ran that upstaris from my router downstairs see if it was the probs and my home plugs whichwe were rated85mbps were found to be producing about 600k ............ either check the plugs operating range or try to hard wire it to see if that is the prob mate i guarantee it will be a issue wiht the homeplugs

depending on how the house is wired can give big problems as separate ring mains can reduce the bandwidth dramatically .
As said best with ethernet cable you can safely run 100mtrs with no affect at 100mbps

Hi, I also have glitches on some HD channels only. The non HD channel is fine. I have 200mbs hoemplugs to connect to VM broadband. I have the DM800HD Pro (clone) and have tried different images. Will try direct link to VM box see if it improves.

As other have suggested try it directly plugged in but you could also try doing a ping from DCC in the telnet tab. Try sites like google, bbc and then the server provider and see what the response times are like for direct plugged in and via the homeplugs.

I get around 30ms and some around 60ms.

I think my problems is with signal from the dish. you can check through setup/service searcing/sat find. values should be around 90%/90%/0
