External HDD Dreambox...does it work ?

    Hi,

I am going to add HDD to my DM800SE.

I am not averse to buying one and fitting internally. However I have a 500gb 3.5 drive I removed from Sly box. Much cheaper to buy a caddy. Will this work if I go down this route and connect to rear USB ?

    Thanks

You might have to buy a power supply to power the hd,just get a cheap 2.5 harddrive format to fat 32,very easy to install 5 screws if memory serves, pop it in and away you go.

      Hi

Im sure there are people who have got an external hdd working but Ive tried around 3 or 4 external hdd with its own power supply and didnt manage to get it working, couldnt even get a usb drive to work.

In the end used a 20gb 2.5 hdd from an xbox and fitted it internally and works straight away. Fitting is a doddle 5/10 mins max.

I've got a 2 1/2 inch hdd external in a esata caddy with own power supply that works fine on most images but not all and also used a old 3 1/2 hdd and as long as it is initialized it works fine.

Your external 3? inch drive will need an external power supply. You can't run it from the USB power. However once you have sorted out power for it, you can use it very successfully over USB to your DM.
Personally, I'd test the drive+USB on your PC before diving in to connecting it to the DM. The idea is to make sure there's never more than 1 unknown or changed issue at any one time, otherwise debugging rapidly becomes too difficult.

To power my 3.5 external 500gb HDD caddy I used the supplied sata lead for the internal HDD and got a 12v supply off the board from the fan connector

You may have to format it

I format it ntfs, which could be incompatible.

Copy your files somewhere safe then use the dm to format the hdd. It takes an age mind you. Then use DCC to ftp the films over to the hdd.
                        It is longwinded
