    Fan question.

Hello. Ii know you have probably seen and read all these types of posts before but I haven't really seen a question like mine before which is why I am about to ask.

We all know the clone fans can be loud. Mine is fine when the DB is on as the volume kills it but on standby at night when lying in bed.... its noticeable.

I have seen guides to add 5v fans from pc world etc. Is it possible for me to use a laptop fan turned upside down (so it sucks out and not into a heatsink) or will it still spin the same way, that could be a silly question haha? Can I make the laptop fan 5v too or is it possible to make the supplied fan 5v as well and if so is it capable as its small?

    Thanks

    Hi mate.
These fans here are 12v (you can get black ones if you look around), but if your practical skills are ok you can cut the plug off and connect the pos + neg to a old usb cable which is 5v, You can then turn one of the fans round, easy enough (4 screws) then you get 1 pushing air in and the other pulling out. Stick it with double sided tape or similar to the top of the box and plug it into one of the usb ports on the back of the box. It obviously wont spin as fast as it is a 12v fan running off 5v, but they do a good job and are very quiet as they are not spinning at full speed.

If that's something you cant do, I would go with a usb laptop cooler, but they can be a bit noisy.

    Good luck

00360362878 you seem like the man to help me. Yes, ive a good basic understanding. I have set up a running fan from a USB end and a laptop fan. This is the USB end here USB 2.0 Sockets : USB Connectors : Maplin Electronics

It is easily soldered and so on then. Are all USB 5V, even that one?

So I've the USB end and a laptop fan that spins nicely but the issue is the fan cant be turned upside down to suck out as either way it still sucks. I can take the blades out but the connect is 1 way. I suppose with a bit of cutting and glueing I could turn it around.

What do you think is the best way to go about this? 2 fans (sucking in and out) or 1 fan sucking in or out?

It's really up to you mate, I think whatever is easiest for you. I have used the twin fans for a couple of years now on my 800 pro's, and I have fitted them on our kids. You can also use a 240v plugin usb charger to power the fan. They run 24/7 all year round, and one of them is in the bedroom (don't hear a thing).
These are the things that keep you busy mate.
You can then get rid of the noisy internal fan.

Have a go, they are cheap as chips.

If the small internal fan turns off when you put the box in standby then just remove that and connect the wires to where it went

Yes you are right fergal, but that is a 12v supply and I have tried it, but it's far too noisy. But whatever is good for one isn't right with everybody.

The fan is silent on my m8's box you cant hear a thing, maybe you have a noisy fan put a drop of oil on the spindle

Fergal mate, it's the air flow that creates the noise, even WD40 wont sort that.
There are many threads with dozens of ideas, and I knew when I answered this one someone else will send it into as spin.
So I suggest this should be the last post, and Ulsterbeef can get on with making his own mind up with the best way to keep his box cool.

Hi folks. Just to report I am making a it of progress of the fan front. My problem with the fan was the noise it made on standby. Not when watching tv as it cant be heard anyway.

I rigged up a 5v fan and a USB plug. I wired it into the internal USB which keeps the fan running even on standby. The 2 external USBs do too when on standby. Is this always the case?

My question is this.... is it ok to keep the dreambox on with no fan while on standby just?

That is the way they are designed, if you use the usb ports the fan wont turn off when you put the box into standby, that is why i suggested to use the pins the small internal fan is connected to,
but if you have one of the earlier dm800's the small internal fan did not switch off when you put the box into standby, this was fixed in later models so if the box is in standby the fan is off so that should answer your last question
