I have seen so many people have problem with adsl by not following simple rules. Always plug your router into the BT master socket, never use an extension lead to extend the line cord, especially those flat type. Always use a short line cord and a decent adsl filter. Fit an adsl filter to all phones in the house. You would be shocked how you can effect your line speeds by not following these simple steps. It is better to extend on the lan side than the adsl line side.
Good to hear your getting there weedman. Test you BT line by dialing 17070 and selecting quite line and see if you are getting any noise on the line.
