Hate to throw a spanner in the works here, but how do know that all of the jittering is being caused by the modem. What about your service provider? You need to eliminate this as a mode to failure also. Check your ecm times on a reliable internet connection to determine if there is an issue here.

last june i tested a few routers and dongles
and found that with these 2 as a pair worked perfect
        no freeze

        Edimax 3G-6200n router
        with HUAWEI E1750 T-MOBILE dongle
        perfect no freeze
        cant fault this combo

heres the speed test for the pair

          Hi,

Your not throwing spanners in works, any and all info / input is welcome. I don't know how to check the ECM times using the wireless configuration. Though I have been checking the Ping times and I "kind of" understand what is happening when it jitters.

I can have a good strong 3G Signal, with the modem on HSDPA (checked via Netgear Router Login), the ping will be around 250ms. When it is running like that there is no jittering. Then the jittering will start and the pings can go upwards of 1500ms, though with an average of about 650. If I check on the Netgear then the Modem will always have dropped into UMTS mode.

To correct this I found that if I did something as simple as going to the download panel and selecting add ons, once it had made connection and got the list of add ons. Its will all be working fine again.

Thus it is the idling that causes the modem to change to the slower mode.

I am now discovering that the Ping is helping, but, it is still allowing the modem to drop into the slower speed.

Yet a quick press of the download add ons panel and the modem switches right back to the faster mode and it is jitter free again.

Thus far I have tried 2 different Netgear MBR624GU Router (one Uk & one USA), a ZTE MF10 Router. I also have an E220 (I am having best results with this) that is unlocked and upgraded to the latest firmware. A E353 HSPA+ Modem (Locked to 3), and an unlocked E156G.

I have tried THREE and T-Mobile SIM cards, having the best of luck with the T-Mobile.

            Hi Davvo,

I wish I had known this before spending a small fortune on all the different items (listed above).

If your script does't solve the issue I will buy the items you have mentioned (unless you want to sell them?)

Could you tell me, is the router the single or 4 port that you tried?

One other thing, on the E220 I have only just discovered that the light on it changes colour slightly depending on the speed mode - No light = no connection, Blue light = UMTS, Green light = HSDPA. I have been watching this all morning, and running your script it is staying Green for longer, but sure enough it will drop to Blue and start jittering, and with a quick access of the addons panel, it instantly goes back green and all is well.

The Pings are better with the E353, but I find it drops to the slower mode sooner

It is as if, the Ping isn't causing enough traffic for it to remain in the fastest mode.

Can you think of a a better solution? ( I have read on something called KeepAlive?)

            CHEERS

Edit: The Ping is definitely not keeping the modem at the higher speed as it is dropping into jittering quite frequently (access the download panel does the trick for a few minutes)

I suspect that maybe you need a bit more data than a ping provides. Copy the PING line 5 times and ping 5 different addresses at each go, see if that improves it. If you get to so many ping lines that it is unmanageable then run something else that needs more data like NMAP or whois.

If you are paying per data download this will increase the cost of your connection.

                Hi,

                Thanks for the above info.

I still think Davvos Script should do the trick from reading of other peoples experiences (albeit not for the same use).

I have just checked the log file and the script hasn't been running this morning for some reason, hence it is jittereing. I have no idea why it has stopped, just trying suss out what is happening now

                  HELP, PLEASE!!!

I have no idea what is happening, but I noticed the jittering again this morning.

Upon checking the log file the script wasn't running.

I have re-uploaded the files and changed the file attributes, now when I go to read the log file it isn't even there???

The only thing that has changed between yesterday and today is that I downloaded a newer version of TSPanel.

EDIT: No matter how many times I put the log file into the var/log folder it isn't there after a reboot. I have just managed to get it logging by ftping it to the box as soon as the connection was available - however it is no longer there again after a reboot???

                    delete the log file

                    then start dcc click telnet
and paste these 2 lines in one at a time
                    press enter after each paste

                    touch /var/log/checkconnection.log

                    chmod 644 /var/log/checkconnection.log

i think you should buy a different dongle or router
                      as somethings not right
you should not have to keep pinging to get a stable picture

                        Hi Davvo,

Thanks again for the continued help, I will do what you have posted above shortly.

Out of interest, here is another post discussing the same problems for many users, albeit for a totally different use. From what I have read online, it seems to be an issue across a broad spectrum of Dongles all caused by the Dongle going idle with lack of traffic.

                            Hi,

                            @ Davvo

Can you remember if the Edimax 3G-6200n router you had was the single port or the 4 port version? I am going to keep my eye open for one so I might as well get the correct version.

                                Hi,

We are currently away in the Motorhome and I have been using this extensively with the Ping script.

Firstly, it definitely has a positive effect, in that it doesn't drop into the slow mode half as much as without it. However, I cannot find a ping amount that works 100%. But a quick access of any addon panel brings the modem back into full speed mode.

Can you think of anything else I could add to the script of Davvos that may keep it in the higher speed mode permanently?

(something to access once a minute, even if it could replacate the same as trying to access the cams addons as that always brings it to higher speed when I do it manually)

                                Thanks in advance.
