New DM800 owner need Hard drive advice

    Hi all,
I've just got my DM800 se HD

What size hard drive can I fit into it,

Is 320gb or 500gb to small, I do not intend to keep many recordings on it. most will be transfered to by pc, then converted to divx.

And will it record HD content, and in what format?

    Regards Whimick

I have DM800 HD with a 320Gb drive fitted. It's big enough but i would buy the biggest you can afford.
Yes, it can record HD no problem.

Buy a hard drive that suits how much you will be recording , I'm using an old ps3 60gb in my 800se and still plenty of room on it ,although I only record few series here and there and , epg, picons on it. The hard drive format will be "ext3" for enigma 2.

          Hi,

Am I correct in assuming the my DM800SE records in TS format, so an hour of standard video content takes up about 1.7GB.

What format is HD video recorded in?

And what size file can I expect of 1hr of HD Video ?

I'm not sure that a large HD is overkill.

          Many Thanks

yeh all recordings will be in transport stream format (TS)
the hd will use more obviously , i aint sure of actual sizes as i do very little recording. what i have done with my 800SE is use the "network browser" in the network menu , it will scan your network and you can tell it were to store your recordings too (as replacement hard-drive) . make a folder on your computers drive called "media" and right click to enable sharing, this is also useful for using the 800SE to view content on your pc (put recordings in same folder as above) and it will stream high quality recordings and downloads perfectly, over a wired connection that is

I record quite alot of stuff, I set timers and record what I want to watch. I have a 320GB HDD, and I have to be very careful about what I want the keep. I find for me, 320GB is just not enough.. I wish I had gone bigger (500+).

A Full 1080 HD recording (of 1 Hour) will be around 5.5GB.

Converting these on a PC is a long job, I just copy them to my PC (best over a wired connection). Strip out the adverts (which brings the file size down to around 4.5GB. And I keep them is .TS format (This is the best for retaining MAX quality of the HD file). You could wrap it in a .mkv wrapper. But its not required and will save you hardly any space.

I have a 750GB sata 2 HDD I pulled out of my new laptop (which now has a SSD). So I'm going to be putting my 750GB into my dreambox (recordings, movies, etc...), and use the 320GB in my laptop as a 2nd HDD.

I have a 500Gb fitted to mine and its never been more than 35% full with 40-50 hours of recording. I use DreamBox edit to transfer them to PC (using ftp) and play them with VLC Player.

                      Thanks for the many replies,

I've just order a 2.5 320Gb hard drive, which I think will be enough for my needs.
