Does every bootloader fit on a DM800HD, and does a clone require a patched version?

nope, each sim team has there own hacked images and most teams now include the bootloader within the image.
firstly try and establish the sim type, Ferrari, sim2 , estar, you can check the unit for stickers or watch the small lcd screen as you boot it up.
sim2 is most popular and 84b is most recent bootloader for them,
report back what you find and your box type and you will be pointed in the right direction, flash it without this essential info and you may temporarily brick your box with "no ca error" fault
