SW Upgrade

I do not change my STB frequently. So, there are newer attractive sws developed. Is there a risk to upgrade to new SW, will my STB slow down like the PCs with new OS? Will the channel zapping time grow a lot? Seeing the videos on Youtube the STBs with much stronger processor and more memories are not faster at all.
