What is Enigma?

Can someone point me to some reference about Enigma?

I have been using it for several months but don't have a clear idea about what it is exactly... I know it is some form of Linux distribution, but who maintains it and do I need to apply updates periodically, and is it the same version of Enigma irrespective of whether I run BlackHole, OpenPLI or anything else?

Thanks for the link, but to be honest it only mentions Enigma as being the OS used on dreamboxes. Interesting article though....

Its Linux Enigma1 & 2 both written for Dream Multimedia, file structure wise they are all very similar to Linux Operating system and its off shoots Ubuntu,Debian etc...
