Make sure the he'd is formatted to something Linux can see like ext3. I just googled 4 a formatting program to do that. Then just unplug the box. Plug in the hdd then power the box up. Go in to settings and a hdd option will b there. Initialise the drive and it should be good to go. If the drive is powered off the USB port it might not have enough juice to run the drive properly though.

              I had the same problem.
Sometimes the power is not enough of things like WD passport. I ended up using an old seagate 320 powered HDD. Even then I had to muck about with it for ages.I could see it in set up system then harddisk but not in device manager. Not too sure how I ended up getting it working but in the set up-system- harddisk I picked initialization. It failed but strangely enough and I have a feeling it may have been pure coincidence the device manager saw it then I formatted it mapped it and put the recorded path to it and it worked.

get an internal one, much better and less clutter. iv put one in mine a samsung 400gb (?39 brand new, delivered ebay), initialised it in the settings and it was away, records mint.

I second that. I had a powered usb drive and my box was so unstable with it it was unreal. I put an internal drive in and its perfect. Just make sure you have a decent cooler, or you're asking for trouble with overheating
