for anyone else with a similar problem, this was sorted by doing the following:

Connect to your dreambox using Dreambox Control Center (DCC). In the telnet section of DCC, tick the HDD box then run the following commands:

        1) Firstly, run the unmount command. (this may not work if your drive has not been mounted at all)
        2) Then, run the format command. This may take a couple of minutes (if it says writing inode tables, it is working)
        3) Finally, run the mount command.

Once you have done this reboot the box, then go back to the HDD settings on your dreambox and it should now say in use and you should get the Start Recording, Add Recording etc .

I am not able to mount a USB stick, when runing a telnet on DCC I get no such file or directory!, and sorry for the font color I am using original theme.
