If you already have a sim for the 800 why not try to update that rather than buy a new one.

Toysoft has developed a program which will do this for you as long as you have or have access to a windows based smart card reader. See this link Security Smart Card - Dreambox Made in China OEM Forum
it takes you through the different sim cards and the tool you need to modify your sim is also available there.

If you take a look at Toysoft;s DMSim tool then it is just a case of pushing buttons - the descriptions for these are simple to see and understand.

I have already done this and it works easy - equally, Toysoft is a great guy who is also very helpful if you have any questions before or afterwards. You do need a USB card reader

I cannot see how you will 'brick it' and even so its worth a try especially if your fallback is to buy a new one.

I think it best when people can pass on their actual experience rather than 'I think whatever'.

Could you recommend a cheap sim smart card reader/writer
I wouldn't mind giving this a go to update my BL72 bootloader to the BL76.

            cheers

Go to the link I posted in post 3. If you look at the postings there are guys saying which card reader they used and some of these were ex ebay and cheap.
I bought the recommended one from Toysoft on the basis that this guaranteed his proggy would work OK and it did. Although this is more than a replacement sim would be I also wanted to have a play with the sim and had an eye on the future, if there are any further developments that Toysoft does his reader should hopefully be compatible.
On top of that I shared the cost and device with a mate who also did the upgrade of his sim from 2.0 to 2.01

Others have repoprted that thw Omnikey 6121 and Castles EZ100PU work and the Omnikey 3123 USB too.
The important bit is that it does not work with Phoenix and smartmouse devices unless you have windows smartcard drivers for that.
You may also want a holder for the sim if you are using a smartcard device google Rebel sim card, this is what I used.

DM_Sims latest version is v0.7 and supports all the public Sim 1.0 T1 from Ferrari team (There is v00.02, v00.03, v00.04, v00.05 and v00.06 for Sim 1.0 T1). You can upgrade them to Ferrari DM800 sim... also the DM600 Sim 1.0.

You can upgrade the Sim 1.0 and 2.0 from T2 team (2.01 team), to Sim 2.01 also.

The upgrade is working 100% if you use a compliant programmer, the Gemplus is definitely the best to use and there is no error from it. GempluStore.com - DM_Sims home - Selling Smartcard USB and PCCard / PCSC Readers and writters will show you the 2 models (PCMCIA for 2.01 only, and the USB for Ferrari T1 and 2.0x ones).

Just be aware that some Windows compliant programmers are not fully compatible, and could "stuck" your card. So the Gemplus are really to consider, and definitely will be the one used for any further development or new software on this field.
