    Western Digital Passport External HDD

    Hi
I've just brought a External HDD which i intend to use for recording on my DM800 but also to store all my movies from my Windows PC so i can carry them around with me when needed. What would be the best way of going about this? What would i need to format it to? Would I need to create a partiton?
Here is the Hard Drive which i've got

[ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004445JIQ/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=computers&psc=1]WD My Passport Essential 500 GB Arctic White Portable Hard Drive (USB 3.0/2.0): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories[/ame]

    Thanks

    I don't have a DM800 but

Most likely have to create 2 partitions, first partition ext2/3 for the DM800 and the second NTFS/FAT32 for Windows. The DM800 will format the first partition.

Windows doesn't have the ability to read ext2/3 although there is a program about somewhere (whose name I forget) that will allow you to read the contents.

hmm shouldn't really make a great deal of difference. Partition it with windows, if it allows you to create 2 partitions and format the second one with NTFS or FAT32 (will FAT32 see that size HD? I have no idea) however when you plug the drive into your DM you need to initialise in the setup menu, it should only format the first partition and will do so in ext2 or 3 leaving your Windows partition alone.

        Cheers

I've partitioned my drive into 2 partitions. The 1st partion is ext3 and the 2nd is nfts. I thought this would sort out my problem however, when i initialise the hard drive with the dreambox, it ignores the partition and initiates the whole drive :S

Finally got it sorted! What a Relief!!
I split my drive into two partitons using Easeus Partiton Master. The 1st partion formatted to Ex3 and the 2nd formatted to NFTS.
Then connected the external to the dreambox and then mounted it.
Then I ftp'ed into my box and created a folder called movie in the /media/hdd path. so it looks like /media.hdd/movie
                  Thats it. Sorted
Now i can use my hdd for recording on the Dm800 and for storing my movies
