Hi MIki. Thanks for that info - it gives me hope. Like i said i am going to buy the soldering iron this morning so i can start to operate on that damn cable. Is it possible to buy a null modem cable with the wires already crossed or do you have to do it yourself?? Take care and thanks again.

Make sure correct com port is enabled.
Sometimes best to delete com port in device manager and let it assign new com port.

Just to add the cables do work, make sure you have correct drivers as well.

Hi. I bought a soldering iron but i must admit it looks a bit scary to unsolder pns 2 and 3 and cross them over because all the pins are close to each other . I will try it in daylight when i can see better. Regarding drivers how can i find out if i have them?? I did get an installation cd with the cable which i have installed ok, would the drivers be on there?. Any further help appreciated before i start soldering the cable. Regards.

try this link USB to RS232 Serial Null Modem Cable COM DB 9 Pin Lead
if this one does not work it's the driver or the loader this one is stated to be able to be used with sat. recievers
