    Newbie Question

    Hi All,

First of all apologies for signing up and posting straight away but you seem like a helpful and knowledgable bunch ;-)

I've been learning about satellite setups etc over the past few weeks, and I'm astonished how complicated things are and how much there is to learn. I only wish I had found this forum earlier.

Anyway Ive currently got Sky + and I'm wanting to have a bit "play" with another box. At first I looked at the Dreambox (I'm from an IT background) but everyone advises you to stay away from them as your first box. I've decided to go for a Technomate box as they seem relatively easy and can support patches etc.

I want a box that I can patch (softcams) and also add c-lines to in the future if I decide to use cardsharing. Does this mean I need a box with a network port? I've been looking at the 4500 and the 4502 supers but not sure if these are best for me or if there are any other Technomate boxes which will suit me better. Any ideas?

Once again, thanks and any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

Should have mentioned. I'm planning on keeping my sky + setup for a few months, so I'm going to use the existing dish first, then if I like the box and its what I'm looking for I'll install a motorised dish.

i'm sure you mean 5400+5402 they are client only boxes so you can't share your card out you better of to go with a dreambox or something similair if you have an IT background
support for technomates is very bad ,better support on any other box.
If you only want to use a tm for c.s. client only it is very easy to use and set up and picture is very good on the HD tm's

Thanks Thijs, and yes, youre right I meant 5400 and 5402's. I wouldnt need c/s straight away, but in the future I might want it. It would only be as a client though, not a server.

Which other boxes are on the market which are easily patchable?

        Cheers

most other boxes would work with an "image" and the configuring would be something you would have to do yourself
with addons , plugins and extensions
Like i said if you are only going to be a client on the cs side of it the tm's non linux are an easy box and i would go for one of the newer models like the 5402+6902+7102 they let you stream movies files from your p.c. and have the option of a few other features and a divx player .
Have a look at the Dream+open+spider+az boxes
better prices and better support for them

                Thanks all,

I'm now looking at the openbox as suggested as a starter box.

I know that the openbox supports c lines but does it also have softcams? Softcams are the patches which de-cryp certain channels aren't they?

Thanks again for all your help.

I think so but best place to ask would be in Openbox section

no , emus are patches for decrypting channels

softcams are a bunch of keys that contain the ones "in use" for those certain channels opened by the emu or box patches containing the emus

so a spiderbox or blade runs newcamd or cccam , after it is patched , and the bespoke softcams contain the current keys that allow that emu to open that channel or channels

so its the combination of emu + softcam key , or patch containing emu + softcam key , that opens certain channels like diema and nova on 39e for instance

this method is dying out although some useful channels still exist on 5e , 13e , 19e and 39e for instance

the newer cs method is tending to dominate now , mainly using cccam or newcamd

linux boxes tend to run an image ( similar to a patch ) which is an os , and then you add emus like oscam , cccam , newcamd and mgcamd , and also add a softcam too
