6900 super PVR hard drive size advice please?

Need to buy a hard drive for my 6900. Not sure what size to get with my limited budget.
Can anyone tell me the rough GB per hour required for HD please?
Would a standard external hard drive work?
    Thanks in advance

      hard drive

I vae a freecom 320gb hard drive on my 6900. it works but i would not recommend it. firstly it had to be formatted to fat 32 (a bit of a tricky job) and secondly the stb doesnt always recognise it without switching it on and off a few times. I would go for one which is usb powered and already in fat 32. they use about 1gb and hour in sd recording. not sure about hd recording

I'm using a 500gb hdd without any issues.

This is the info from the Technomate website:-

"How to format a hard disc ,

For TM-6900-TM-6800 and TM-5000 USB Series
1-connect hard disc via USB to your pc first
2-go to my computer and click on right hand mouse
        3-select manage
        4-go to disk management
5-see info of the hard disc on the screen
        6-right-hand click again
        7-delete partition
        8-make new partition { it has to be primary }
        9-Do not format ,
10-Make the partition as active by doing right click again,
11-connect to TM-6900/6800 go to USB/management go to format disk press ok and wait
Above for all hard disks 30GB and under

For all hard disks more than 30 GB follow the instruction till number 10

DO NOT FORMAT IN TM-6900 TM-6800 MANAGEMENT DO NOT CHECK DISK

        Download this file from
        h**p://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htmPartition
Now download a copy of fat32format. Extract the single EXE file to somewhere suitable, like C:\.
        Click Start->Run and enter cmd.
CD\ to the where you extracted the fat32format exe,
        e.g. by typing CD /D c:\
        Now you're almost done.
Type this also letter you selected Example: b: c: d: f : Etc.
        fat32format f:
        You should see this displayed
Warning ALL data on drive 'f' will be lost irretrievably, are you sure (y/n)
        Takes few seconds to finish

Connect to your tm-6900/6800 and wait a bit then press record .

In the management do not use check disc or format"

Hi, I use a Western Digital Passport 320GB. Never had any problem with it.
The size required for recording in hd varies depending on the bit rate of the channel you are trying to record. I think about 2-3 Gb per hour.
            Hope this help
            Marco
