if the vu's are too rich, try the tm single or nano much better with a open source box than a closed source

closed source only the tech guys can see the blueprints to alter things as its behind closed doors
open source means to a point free and many teams can do their own thing like images without depending on someone else,so the more teams supporting a product like vu only makes it better.

had a 5402 for about 12 months now haven't had any major problems with it the picture in hd is as good as my virgin box the channel change is about 2 seconds there's plenty of support on here and other sites for it the recording is good can series link so all in all i think it would be a good choice

what did you decide? I am in same boat as you, spider gone, so looking at db800hdse but the nano has been mentioned and looks pretty good spec wise.

If your an Ex-Spiderbox owner and looking for another similar box then look at the Spiderbox 6000HD with so called Gift around ?90

1080 HD with upscailing for SD on the HDMI port
Digital audio output (optical or co-ax) so that I may connect to my Denon Amp for home cinema
Great stability for .................

....................
Large channel capacity (I use 42east to 31wast)
Favourite channel lists (16 if possible)
Great support on the forums
Good menus (like the old technomates)
Quick channel changing
Good reliable editor for use on my win 7 laptop
SoftCam capable
Common Interface (CI slot) and card reader (multi system)

Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated

hi i have a technomate 5402 had it for a long time with no probs.easy channel shifting ect.well supported . i also have a 5502 which has a better picture which is not so well supported the epg is useless and it wont recognise the external hard drive. hope this helps. cheers.

A little surprised with that are you using the latest patch for the 5502 as it is working nearly 99.9% correctly now and also opens UPC on 0.8? west with softcam key

Also i was also told you can fit a drive internal on the 5502 according to Technomate

thanks for the posts so far
i am still undecided but slightly leaning towards 5502 as it is newer receiver and works with 0.8 west on softcam (Aldo not for too long as UPC is doing card change, but the fact remains it is first and stll only one to do so out of the 2 which leaves me to think with other future features that maybe available only on 5502)
has anyone actually opened a 5502 or actually installed a hard drive or is this maybe a myth.

a friend of mine bought the 5402HDCI M2 a couple of days ago and is very happy with the performance espcially with the handling of the unmentionable .....

...... business but his only complaint was the modulator weakening the UHF antenna feed which he tells me is quite common with technomates from his experience (he installs quite a lot of them for FTA channels from the old 5000 and tm1000 on wards) bear in mind the only visible difference is the presence of a modulator

i did open the 5502 there was plenty of room but there was no fittings to secure it also i could not find anywhere to plug it in. a big empty box .ps.ihave the latest patch installed.

I can tell you now it does hold an internal drive that is what the so called big space is for you have to purchase the 'OPTIONAL' Hard Drive caddy that fits inside
