Will try and answer for you using the little bit of knowledge gained from here,
As you know, Sky produce satellite receivers, but to access all channels you have to purchase a card (Other providers do the same) as the providers use encryptions to prevent unauthorised access. The receivers you purchase for SKy or other companies are designed to accept their cards with their format/encryption. Your receiver as with ours is not made for one specific encryption service, hence CAMS (Conditional Access Module) are used. Official cards are pushed into these which inturn are pushed into your receiver. (easiest way i can explain is they are mathmatical translators)
As they use different encryption codes for different channels, the service provider produces a series of keys that can be automaticaly changed by the providers to prevent hackers breaking the codes with text editors etc. Although a few can still be cracked by the tech guys, many use an encryption system that is so complex the tech Guys cannot crack. For those that they can, they post the new encryption updates in 'softkeys' which you load onto your receiver,for those they cannot the only way to watch the programes is by using legall official cards.
As your receivers is not produced for a specific provider the software in your system has to be changed to act like official receivers, this is done by a patch.

its worse than u fink

sky force u to plug into the fone system.After 12 months u can unplug but they came up with a way to make u keep it plugged in call it a multi room system.If not plugged into the fone system will warn u then charge u full amount for the box.
Cable have something called return path.You cud go the headend fone ur mrs ask her wot she doing.Find out that she lied u are watching neighbours and before that u watched jeremykyle.It lists the whole lot wot the box has done thats why sky want ur box plugged into the fone so they know wot u watch.
Worrying that to me.When cable cant get a response of your box a engineer will call to find out why the box wont talk back.
Has its good points tho thats why cable have the best broadband.
Going back to encription of channels on analogue there was only 22 million ways to do it hate to find out how many ways can with digital but digital is after all just 0 and 1.

Ive worked in the tv industry for 27 years all ends of it thats why i dont watch it much.Went to school in cannock two brothers there broke old filmnet codes and also broke codes for cable.They was twins tossed a coin to decide who took the wrap one went to prison.
Have to admit it good watching wot u not meant to tho and i do respect this site.Any one here need any tech help ask me i know loads.Can tell u how to make it work and where all the faults are.Tip 90% off faults are conxs they hard to do right.
