I used a tm5400 super usb , and the recording to usb hdd was really good, sometimes i recorded to a usb flash drive and then watched them on my pc using vlc player with no probs.
The only time i noticed a drop in picture quality was when using a cheap usb drive with slow read / write speads.
You can record and watch them back using your stb or record them to a usb drive and watch them on your pc, or in my case stored them on a nas drive to stream to pc.

Nah mate! what im wanting to do is convert a downloaded film to .TS so it can be played back on the machine and not having to burn a DVD all the time, like my fav movie of all time is ''my big fat greek wedding'' it would have been nice to convert from AVI to TS. and not have to convert to DVD. as that saves on the DVD Discs, if ya get what i mean! i hopeWhat is it you are trying to do ... i could understand converting from the ts formate but not to it
