    Old stuff these models.
Go for TN500/600 or if HD wanted TM800.

If you are focused on the two mentioned above then I could recommend the 1500ci+ which, though old as mentioned by Manic, is a bit more technically advanced from a standard box.
It can be formatted through the rs323 port via a null modem cable allowing you any available software be it sat or otherwise.
Alot of advancements have been made in the meantime and a HD box would give you a few more choices of channels as HD expands through the different providers.
At the end of the day it is your choice and you should pick up any of the above TM`s almost dirt cheap at this stage. I picked up mine at a car boot sale for 30 euro about two years ago.

I dont have one but I just Googled Technomate 5400 ci+usb specifications and all the info was there.
This receiver is different from the 1500 ci+ in that it is a PVR which allows you to record channels (and though it does not say so in the spec. you could be only able to record a
programme on the same transponder as you are watching )
          Again, I`m no expert.
It really depends on what you want to do. Do you just want to scan for free to air on different sats or do you want to record or maybe you want to go through pc?
This model will also support motorized set up.(most do nowadays)
A lot of people start out with the basic box to scan for FTA(free to air) and then move on to motorized/bigger dish/HD/Linux etc. It depends on your curiosity/laziness/wallet and other factors.

I slightly edited the last reply after you read it.
OK, so you`ve got the bug. Motorized is the way to go. 1 meter dish minimum although an 80 cm will give you most sats anyway. The 1m will however help in bad weather against signal loss over an 80cm.
My set up was 4 fixed 80cm dishes so as I could instantly change channels on different sats and with multi feeds and monoblocks was on 42e 28e 19e 16e 13e 5e 1w and 5w. (we are allowed ond dish over here as well but nobody complains or checks).
Itried HD receiver and enjoyed an improvement in picture quality even on a standard TV as well as a few extra channels via HD. The ci=(Common Interface) allows you to buy viewing cards (not sky) to watch providers on other sats and to buy programmable cards as well.
I cant really advise you more on pvr`s or linux etc but you could ask questions in these categories and plenty of very helpful people will see you right.
              Happy scanning.

The sky dish will do just nicely(for starters) to experiment with. The sl65 mentioned below my avatar is a Silvercrest receiver from a sat set up bought cheap with 60cm dish through Lidl. That`s how I started and progressed from there.
The sky dishes over here are usually the 80cm oval dish and I think this is to cover for signal loss in heavy rain etc. I have seen people posting sky dishes as being 45cm in GB so if yours is 45cm then you may be limited to 28e which is the sky channels(FTA of course) wsith little scope for picking up any other sats even the two strong ones at 19 and 13 e.
You can Google Lyngsat or Flysat and they both show what is available on all the sats. I find Flysat to be better as it is updated daily and can inform you if any encrypted channels are open at the moment to FTA.
