I had vix loaded in the memory stick for vu+solo2 but when I insert the the memory stick and switch on the vu+ all it comes up is "STARTING", what could be the problem?

Are you saying that you are trying to flash the box?
If so check your usb make sure it has vuplus directory then inside that should be solo2 directory and inside that directory should be your files.
Put the stick in the box, it will say strting then press power button to flash the image -
