if you dont know a lot about linux boxes i would do a bit of reading of the stickies about how to flash and load cams and how to edit the cfg file to add the extra's in to get the channels open, as for images for blackhole images you need the join vu community or a forum where
they store images and the extra's you will need. you are going for a box that's a lot different in how it's set up and works so just take the time to read up on it first, as for which vu or any other linux box everyone has there
own view i have tried most vu boxes and the quality of all models is very good and at this time i have a vu solo2. but all models work more or less the same way so i guess it's down to how much you want to spend or which you want when you've taken a look at the range of the models. and you will need a couple of panels like a dcc and a dreambox edit to communicate with boxLast edited by benny/9; 29 May, 2014, 16:58.Please Read Carefully!

as benny says a vu is Linux so it is different to a skybox f5 . flashing isn't necessarily that different , I mean you can flash a vu via a usb stick the same way you flash a skybox f5 , but with a vu+solo atleast (duos are different) when it is flashing its hard to know if its flashing . what happens is a little led light on the front changes color and ten flashes on and off .
I have a solo (clone ) and I love it , it does a lot . blackhle for me is one of the best images (that's the name of the tv software) if not the best , pli I think comes a close second .i don't know if blackhole image for a vu is available here from the downloads section but if not you will find it easily enough via google . with my vu i can watch a lot of free iptv channels /movies /youtube /you**** and tsmdia etc etc , for that alone its worth having a vu or a Linux box .
setting up a vu or a Linux box is different to a skybox as i say but its perhaps not as difficult as people may think . there is lots of info about vu boxes available and lots of experienced people that can help you if you get stuck. remember a vu is Linux , and Linux on a vu /dreambox/amiko alien etc etc is pretty much the same thing , so enigma 2 tutorials for one box will often work fine for other enigma 2 boxes , the difference really being the image used . but if you get a vu the benefit is that once you have learned you will be able to handle any enigma 2 box .
the difference been a vu+solo and a vu+duo is that a duo has two tuners so you can record one channel while watching another . there are clone vus and original vus , i would say on the whole a clone (which is what i have ) is as good as an original , ive never had a single problem with mine , but you may want an original , one big difference between clones and originals is price , an original can cost double or more than a clone .i love it when a dreambox comes together.

trouble is with clones owners wanting original latest images on box and then oops bricked happens.

If I were to buy one of these with an image already loaded. Would it then just be a matter of entering my existing gift details and away we go or is there a lot more to it than that. I have an f5s which is fine except for the epg and recording not really that great.Comment

if the cams were also loaded, you also need to know where to
select it and start it,plus you need to get a channel list or scan
the box yourself then the answer is yes, just be aware some images have
a poor epg and as for hard drives i have more than enough
to watch i have never fitted one, so i cant say how good they work,
the main thing is you need to buy a box with the hard drive fitted
and my advise would be keep away from the clone modelsPlease Read Carefully!

Ok I shall bear all that in mind if I buy one. Unfortunately where I come from there aren't many other users to compare systems with so basically It's sort yourself out although there is some fantastic tutorials on here so you're never really on your own!************************************************** **********

mate everyone has had to learn and once you get into the linux boxes
things do start to get easier as you get going with them. also
you could be amazed there could be other vu users in your area
that might help, i my area iv'e helped a few who were new to linux boxes
and iv'e even helped on the phone and team viewer, just post the general area
your in and see if anyone gives you a pm, and when i say area i dont mean your
address, town or city but like Bristol or west midlands. Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire etc:Please Read Carefully!

Thanks mate, if I do go down the vu route I'll see if there's anyone near me. I doubt it though as I live in a small town in Ireland. I'm amazed the box works at all as the broadband is really poor as well.**************************************************

hi mate been a while , I hope your well . with v3 clones you can use any image as far as im aware mate , all tho the latest vix images are perhaps the exception due to the clone killing software they have added , so if vix is avoided there shouldn't really be an issue . but other than that any image can be used on v3 boxes atleast at present but things can always change going forward . v2 boxes of course can only take v2 clone images , my box is v2 clone and I have been able to do reasonably regular image upgrades with no problems , but I do take your point mate . talk soon matei love it when a dreambox comes together.

yes if you got one pre loaded with a suitable image and as they say ready too go (meaning all free to air channels are viewable ) then yes your post would be correct . but you would need a program like dream control center or vu control center which are similar , as that's how you connect to the box to add or edit files etc . its not hard at all .
I have a 60gb hard drive (external ) attached to my box , it works a treat for recording or downloading , that said I don't record much . as for an epg you can add a 7 day epg to an enigma 2 box but you would need a hdd or atleast a usb memory stick attached to the box .i love it when a dreambox comes together.
