how can i tell if i need to update bootloader on vu

hey guys

just picked up a second hand solo and want to install blackhole 1.73 image onto it.

Currently the box has an image on it called

"vuplus_experimental image August 22nd 2011"

Do i need to update the bootloader before installing blackhole?

I dont want to brick the box

Is it a genuine box ?, if so no harm in flashing the bootloader first then flashing the newer image second :-)
