Help with hard drive

Ok here's the story. My psu went pop and I think it affected my hdd.
I've hooked it up to my pc with my hdd caddy and managed to do a quick format in ntfs, so it seems that the hdd is ok.
I hooked it up to my vu+duo, still in the caddy, via the usb port. It has an external power supply due to my problems with my clone's psu.
I managed to mount it with no problems, but it won't initialise for some reason, Throws up an error along the lines of nfks fail.
Can't remember if that's the exact error, but I can check later.
Reason I can't check now is because it's been doing a file system check for the last hour.
Any tips on how to get it to initialise? Can I do a telnet command or something like that?

You would have been better formatting it as fat32 then trying to initialise, In fact have you tried to record anything after mounting it in the menu.

After reading on another forum, I've now flashed the original image and managed to initialise the hdd.
I then flashed my blackhole backup and ran into more problems.
when I tried to initialise in blackhole it said it couldn't unmount the drive as it's in use by timeshift.
So I tried to unmount it in mount manager, but it wouldn't have any of it.
So I tried changing the mount path, but that didn't work either as it wouldn't let me change the timeshift/recording path, saying it's not an ext3/ext4 file.
I think the problem might be that the hard drive is no longer connected internally, but is now connected by usb. So where I'm trying to use a backup from when it was internally connected, it's throwing a bit of a wobbly because the mounts/ paths are all different.
I guess I need to do a clean image install.
What should the the mount paths be for my hdd and flash drive both connected via usb?
Do you mount first then initialise, or the other way round.
I tried recording something but no hdd was detected.
Any ideas or thoughts on my approach?

You would be better doing a clean install as your backup will have the paths set to internal.

I always find when you flash a new image and have HDD and USB Stick that its better to load minimal plugins and addons until you have everything working as it should, then you can start loading your favourite plugins etc...
