playback problems

most recordings when i playback randomly freeze and then i must rewind and works ok again(for a while)is there any thing i can do to remedy this. wife is beginnign to utter the three letter word(where the sun is) we banned from the house. any help is appreciated and apologies if i have missed a thread elsewhere

Are these FTA channels or just every channel you record and playback ?
