on mine if you press the blue button [vix] it brings up a list cross epg downloader select and ok ,it should reload, wait a few mins until picture comes back.
i would say it is possible to do it from anywhere as long as you can get into his network as he would have to give you access rights.

You can use team viewer to access his PC/Laptop via network and access the box that way or directly to his box via ssh, probably easier but i dont have vix is to set his Crossepg to do a daily download for the EPG and Blackhole always carry up to date channel lists on there servers so it would be just a case of green button then yellow button select settings and download the latest list restart box all done.

If your asking this then i would suggest team viewer is the easiest option as SSH is Linux and used through a remote desktop program like Putty.

head over to the teamviewer website there is a tutorial video on there and the program is free as well.

The easiest option is to get him a free dyndns account which will allow you to always know his WAN IP and then use programmes like FlashFXP and DreamboxEDit to manipulate all the files on his box.

If he has a fixed WAN IP and you know his password, all you need to do is have access through any firewalls. Set up portforwarding on his router to allow this.

Change the default password on the box to something more secure though.
