    HDD for Duo

I'm buying a duo shortly and want an internal HDD to slot into it. I've read that it needs to be 3.5 SATA and that the Western Digital ones are decent - I can get 1TB for ?75 from Amazon. For the price, it seems daft to get the 1TB when the price difference between that and the 2TB is minimal but i'm sure I read somewhere that there may be an issue with putting a 2TB HDD into a Duo?

Is that right or would it be fine? Grateful for any replies.

Hi 2tb should be fine. The best place to get 3.5 sata is out of old sly box a lot cheaper .

My Sky box only has 500GB I think and it doesn't take long to fill it up. I've also heard that it's a bugger to get the thing out!

There are plenty of good online videos available and if you've got one spare it costs you nothing.

Like dougal said the ones in the sky box are ideal.

Its not just pop off lid and get out but 10 min with pliers and Phillips screw driver and its out.

500gb is fine unless your using it as storage.

I'll be using it for recording. As I said, we get through the 500GB fairly quickly at the moment with the Sky box.

it used to be true of the older non HD sky boxes that the HDD's inside ( IDE or PATA Drives ) were in fact double their advertised size as sky partitions and keeps half for system use and on demand content. so a 160 gig sky digibox had in fact a 320 gig HDD inside, weather or not this is true of the HD boxes i dont know.

Hmmm, that's interesting. So it could be more than 500GB - would I just need to flash the partition or something?

Thats possible, or it may be that they now label the sticker on the box correctly and just partition that so you'r 500 gig HDD could only be giving you 250 gig user accessible space for your recording etc. The only way to know for certain would be to check the sticker on the HDD it self.

I think your right RD, the HDD is advertised as 500gb but a partition is kept aside for anytime TV irrespective if you turn that feature off or not.

Once you take HDD out tho and format you have the full space, so you would have more space than you thought you were using.

Cool, i'll take a look at some tutorials then for removing the HDD from the Sky box. If it's suitable in terms of space etc then it will save me a few quid.

                      Thanks chaps.

which ever way they now categorize the drives you'r either going to have a 500 gig drive of which you can at present only use half, or a 1tb drive of which you can at present only use half.

even so if it is just a 500 gig drive once reformatted in the duo, thats a good amount of space and unless you hoard movies and tv shows for a rainy day it will take some time to fill that up, even with HD content.

I too thought about the 2TB due to the very little price difference bewteen that and the 1TB

I settled for a 1TB Caviar Green WD10EZRX for ?59 though which I hope will work fine

My Duo is coming with it's original image which I hope will keep installation of the hard drive simple and good

2Tbite drive is fine in DUO running Vix ver2.4 also i would like to try a 4tb hard memory with Blackhole Partitioned.
That would be very fast and still abit expencive.

The original image while fit for purpose is very basic and no where near as user friendly or user customizable as the third party images available.
