Not sure i get that quote as the OP is asking about turning off permanent timeshift which has no relevance to his duo being a clone or original.

Its a clone running vix. Not a big deal anyway, main concern is getting a hard drive thats not shorting the box.

Will try a smaller size 5400 drive and report back....

Rather than a 3.5" drive is go with a laptop drive tis what I have installed and works with no probs. Biggest prob may be size as laptop drives only come up to max of 1tb

Thats it, 2.5 inch drives are quite a bit dearer than 3.5 drives. I will try a 320gb 3.5 hdd to see what that does...

Woah, didn't even know that you could get a 2tb laptop HDD. Only have a 250gb laptop drive in mine at the mo, might upgrade that to a 500gb as the kids keep on recording loads of crap and then never watching or deleting it.

Have tried a Western Digital 500GB Caviar green power drive but its still shorting the box.

I bought this drive as it uses less power and is also a favourite choice in many PVR boxes.

Any ideas what I can try now....

Ive had a couple of duo clones and had a few problems with all of them and they were caused by the PSU. This happened to one box and was easily fixed
If the box is working then make sure the connector to the mobo is TIGHT
There seems to be 2 positions for the connector, a loose one and a tight one (You should be able to lift the box up by the connector cable if it is connected properly)
I only use laptop hard disks due to power requirements, 31/2 ins disks need more power from PSU which is a weak point in the clones - you may be lucky and get away with running a 3 1/2 in disk but they don't seem to last

How do you put a 2.5 inch drive in, the bracket that comes with the box is only suitable for 3.5

Probably the easiest and neatest solution is to cable tie it to the holder or drill some more holes in the bracket

I made a paper template and drilled 4 holes in the bracket but 2 is enough.

Ok, well I have removed hard drive from box, reflashed image, put hard drive back in and now the box is fine.

Ive tried putting pressure all round the box, moving it up and down and its perfect.

Started 5 recordings and still ok..

That was the 500gb drive, wonder if I'd have any bother with the 1tb drive.

Wont be trying it anyway, its working thats the main thing..
