you can record up to around 6 channels i believe so if tuner 1 is on a horizontal transponder you can record 3 channels only from that transponder and if tuner 2 is on a vertical transponder again 3 only on that transponder

,yes did test yesterday 6 recordings at once and could access and play recordings from hdd.

Not really just for the VU series its applicable for any Twin Tuner receiver either Linux based or closed source, Technomate make a big song and dance about it with the 5402HD when released stating on the box that you can record 3 channels and watch a fourth or playback from an external hard drive.
The problem is there are only a small few Transponders that actually have any different channels on that you would use the 6 record feature
