Hi just about to buy the above sat box but i don't know if i should
add the 500 hard drive we have a caravan in n/wales i would in the
past use a dvd recorder to record programs/films could i record and store
on the hard drive on the vu+solo and somehow put it on to a storage
device /dvd/usb or tablet to watch in the caravan.

Yes you most certainly can just make sure that whatever device you playback on supports the .TS format, pretty much 99.9% of media players do these days
